Meet The Artist

Rosa Roberts

Rosa Roberts is a British painter whose work is drawn to the vitality of growing things — foliage, fruit, plants and tropical motifs, painted in rich jewel colors with bold gestural marks. Her paintings begin with observational sketching, then move through many iterations before a composition settles and earns a large canvas.

Her surfaces are as considered as her color. Layers of collage and cardboard are worked into the canvas before any paint goes down, creating a ridged, uneven ground that interrupts every mark made on top of it. It is the most time-consuming part of her process and the reason her work is recognizably hers.

FAQ

WHAT MATERIALS DO I NEED?

Straightforward materials — canvas and stretcher bars, gesso, paints and brushes, oil pastels, and cardboard, glue and pins for the surface build. Much of it comes from the hardware store. A full materials list is provided.

Do I need prior painting experience?

No. Rosa’s process is structural and taught step by step, and it’s designed to be followed no matter where you’re starting from.

Do I need to stretch my own canvas?

Rosa shows you how, and explains why she prefers it — the tension has to be tight enough to support the texture you add. A pre-stretched canvas will still work.

How big does my canvas need to be?

Rosa works large in the course, but the process applies at any scale. Start with whatever size feels like a stretch for you.

Do I need a large studio?

You need enough space to lay a canvas flat and step back from it. Rosa recommends around three metres of step-back distance if you can manage it.

Is the course live or pre-recorded?

Pre-recorded, so you can work at your own pace and return to any stage as your painting develops.

How long do I have access?
